What We Do
Cultural Resources
Cultural resources are sites, structures, and objects, such as historic houses, covered bridges, native village sites, artifacts, shipwrecks, and more. The Clark Group (TCG) recognizes the vital role these play in preserving history, architecture, and culture. Drawing on over two decades of combined experience in archaeology, anthropology, and historic preservation, TCG’s cultural resource experts are committed to their protection and study.
TCG’s staff includes Registered Professional Archaeologists and Secretary of the Interior-qualified architectural historians, archaeologists, and historians. Our work directly helps our clients advance projects quickly while meeting regulatory compliance benchmarks.
TCG routinely supports clients with Section 106 compliance under the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), including consultations with State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPOs) and Tribal Historic Preservation Offices (THPOs). We conduct Phase I surveys that integrate background research with fieldwork to identify cultural resources and delineate site boundaries. Our team performs desktop and field assessments of historic properties, leads compliance surveys, prepares detailed reports, and evaluates the eligibility of historic resources for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).
As an example of our work, TCG assisted the Preservation Trust of Vermont (PTV) by conducting a historic resources survey in the town of Gilman, Vermont to help guide its grant-making decisions. The work combined an on-site inspection and comprehensive desktop research to assess the community’s National Register eligibility, supplying PTV with clear and evidence-based findings to guide its decision. Through our partnership with PTV, TCG was listed on their Vermont Restoration Directory 2025.
