Matthew Shoen
Cultural Resources Specialist
Matthew Shoen is a cultural resources specialist based in Essex, Vermont. Matthew’s expertise is in aboveground cultural resources, historical research, and Section 106 evaluations.
Prior to joining The Clark Group, Matthew worked for a firm in Buffalo, New York that specialized in historic tax credit projects. In this role, Matthew wrote National Register nominations for dozens of buildings across the state and developed an enduring love for the built environment. After moving to Vermont, Matthew earned his Master’s in Historic Preservation from the University of Vermont and began working in the regulatory compliance field. Matthew’s projects gave him the opportunity to document the history of a wide variety of resources, such as culverts, aircraft hangars, farmhouses, barns, and ski resorts. He also had the opportunity to write extensive public history documents, including a booklet on the history of the Burlington waterfront and a forthcoming book on a 150-year-old camp community in the Thousand Islands region of New York State.
Matthew lives with his fiancé and their two sweet, but excitable, cats Henrietta and Wilson. In his spare time, Matthew enjoys reading, writing fantasy novels, and cheering on his favorite hockey team.
